• Question: When you left primary school, what did you think you wanted to be?

      I had no idea what I wanted to do when I left primary school! It was only in secondary school when I figured out what I would like to do because I was exposed to new subjects such as business, music, metalwork, etc. Being exposed to all these new subjects made me realise that I loved science.

      I think I wanted to be a teacher when I was about that age. For a long time I still wanted to be a teacher to some degree but ended up doing a science degree. It might be something I loop back around to at some stage!

      I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to be when I left primary school! It wasn’t until I was well into secondary school that I realised I’d like to be a scientist. I think I figured it out when I really was enjoying my science classes a lot.

      I was starting to get inspiration to be a teacher when I left primary school and I think that was because I admired the teachers I had. Although at that age I think I gave more thought to Pokemon than what I wanted to do as a career!

      I really didn’t know. I thought about lots of different things including being a vet, an explorer, a doctor, a scientist and a journalist. I enjoyed my subjects in secondary school more than in primary school too and really enjoyed science and history. As I went through secondary school, I got more and more interested in science but even when I was doing my Leaving Cert I was still unsure about whether I wanted to study science or history at university. I picked science but I think I would have been as happy doing history – I probably would have ended up as an academic anyway!

      I left primary school and went to the math and science high school in my town. I didn’t know what I wanted to be in the future, but I new I wanted it to be related to mathematics, science, engineering, physics, computer and technology 🙂

      Well, I was fairly clueless. But I loved animals, the environment, and traveling. So I wanted to pursue a career in those fields. At that stage, my favourite subjects were geography, science and maths. 🙂

      When I left primary school I wanted to have a job that involved art because I love drawing!
      I found that transition year was a great year for exploring new subjects and learning about different types of jobs 🙂 It was only in transition year that I found out I loved chemistry, and only in 5th/6th year that I decided to study a science subject in college. Before then I thought I hated science!
      Always keep an open mind, you never know what you might grow to like 🙂

      I knew even then that I wanted to be a scientist, but I wasn’t sure what shape it was going to take, I thought I might like to be a computer scientist, but I realised eventually that wasn’t for me.

      Hadn’t a clue but I think I wanted to be a teacher back then!
