Like every other jobs there is difficulties that you can face but it is not harder than any other jobs. You have to choose a specialty, something that you are passionate about and engage yourself in it. Depending on that specialty you will need more or less advanced knowledge in a subject (like maths, physics or chemistry). If you are motivated you can do it no matter the difficulties, so don’t give up and don’t listen to the people saying you can do that job !
Any task feels hard if you do not try to take an interest in it. The rest is simply perseverance and self- motivation. I keep my hobbies alive to help me take breaks in between. I do this as my work requires me to take a fresh look at an experiment if I do not find a solution on first try.
I just had to try.
I agree with Vincent that it’s no harder than any other job. If you have a real interest in science and have the self-motivation, determination and willingness to keep trying than you can do it no matter how hard it can be or feel like.
Counter question: how hard is it to run a half-marathon?
Answer: it depends on the training and mainly on the motivation.
Still, sometimes the last kilometre isn’t fun. But the feeling afterwards is more than worth it.
Same for science.
It is not hard if you are passionate about it, it depends a lot on this and on your resilience (as previously mentioned by other scientist), patience and determination to achieve your objectives.
