What an honset question which deserves an honest answer! I won’t tell you a number, but as a lecturer I earn enough money to pay a mortgage and go on holidays two times a year. For me, that’s all I need. If money was really important to me (but it is not), I would rather haven chosen to work in a company where I would very likely earn more money (but probably I would not like that work as much as my own).

I’m a PhD student, so I don’t make as much as other scientists, but I do make enough to pay for my rent, my groceries, and a vacation once per year.
