Mine is water! Because its so important and all around us! And it’s cool! It expands when you freeze it, floats on water as ice, you have it in drinks, it can be a gas, its really important for chemical reactions and it dissolves stuff!

Carbon dioxide, but only when it’s frozen to make dry ice. We send and receive a lot of packages that are packed in dry ice to keep them cold, and sometimes you have some spare and you can play about with it. I like to throw mine in the sink and turn on the tap so that fog bubbles up over the sink and onto the floor!

I adore dry ice. A lot of the chemicals I order have to be kept very cold while they’re delivered, and most people use dry ice for that. It’s carbon dioxide cooled to about -80 degrees, so that it becomes solid. It’s interesting in that it doesn’t have a liquid form, it just goes straight from solid to gas when it heats. And the condensation from water in the air when it hits something that cold causes that lovely creepy smoke effect you’ve probably seen on television.

One of my favourite things to do when I get a delivery that’s cooled by dry ice is to chuck it in the sink and turn the tap on, and watch fog boil up and roll out over the sink top, while laughing and shrieking “They called me mad! MAD! I’ll show them… I’LL SHOW THEM ALL! BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!”

      Ahem.
