After I graduated from UCC with my MSc, the scientist who supervised my end of year project, Dr. Jonathan Kennedy, offered me a job working for him for 6 months, looking at the DNA of bacteria found in ocean sponges to see if they could make antibiotics.
After that, I got a job with the Alimentary & Pharmabiotic Center in UCC, working with Dr. Cormac Gahan and Dr. Emma Smith on a few projects to do with gut bacteria. That took a year.
In the year since I started my PhD I’ve taken on projects with a load of other scientists, too many to name here. Science is often a team effort these days, when we work together we can tackle really big questions and solve them far quicker than one person working on their own. 🙂
