-The hours. We have deadlines for projects and reports, but as long as the deadlines are met, it doesn’t matter if I come in at noon for a few days here and there.
-The research. Researchers get to look at things and make discoveries that nobody else has seen or found before, and that’s awesome.
-The canteen. Seriously, Damien the Chef makes the BEST food.
-The gadgets. Yesterday I used a centrifuge to subject bacteria to thousands of times the normal gravity we get on Earth. Today I’m using chaotropic salts and ultra-fine silica filters to purify DNA. Tomorrow I’ll be remotely accessing a massive computer network to analyse hundreds of millions of DNA sequences to match them up to the bacteria that live in the human gut. I love my science toys!
I like that I get to meet different people every day and that in doing my job I am making people’s jobs safer, so I am making a difference to people. It may be a small difference but I am helping people which is what I love to do.
There are lots of things I like about being a marine biologist:
• I like going on boats
• I like seeing and learning about amazing animals
• I like asking questions about nature and trying to answer them, its like a quiz
• I like talking to my colleagues about my work and discussing things.
• I like talking to people about my work
• I like travelling to different countries to talk about my work
• I like diving
… and probably 100 more reasons that I have just forgotten :p
I really like that every day is different! That I get to speak to people who are really clever and we can come up with interesting experiments. That I get to try and make students VERY excited about psychology. That I do research that can help kids who are struggling to do better in school.
