Probably Niels Bohr, not just because of his physics discoveries, but because he once went drinking with another physicist and got caught by the Danish police climbing the outside of a bank on a bet: http://www.fampeople.com/articles-niels-bohr-climbing-robber
Niels Bohr was the man. 🙂
Does Dr Nefario from Despicable Me count? Although, he has a hearing problem, so probably Brian Cox. Brian is a UK Physicist and had help the way science is communicated with the public, in particular on T.V. and through his books.
Jane Goodall! She is a famous scientist who used to study chimps in Gombe National Park in Tanzania, a country in Africa.
When she was young she always wanted to study animals, but she had to get a job and became a secretary. Not giving up on her dream, she phoned the famous archaeologist Louis Leakey and asked him for a job! He liked her so much, he gave her money to go Tanzania to study chimp behaviour. She was only 26 years at that time, hadn’t gone to university and had to ask her mother to come along!
Despite that she was one of the first scientists to show that chimps aren’t vegetarians (they hunt) and that they use tools.
When Jane realised how much of the forests around Gombe were cut down, she decided that she had to tell the world about it. Now Jane travels all around the world to talk about her work, to raise awareness about the environment and to inspire people!
Watch this video National Geographic put together on her birthday, its very inspiring:
Oh- I’ve already mentioned Dorothy Bishop. So…. John Bell, have you heard of him? Neither had I until a few months ago! John Bell grew up in Belfast (where I’m from). He didn’t go to university, but then he started to work as a technician (someone who looks after the lab equipment). He was so clever that he proved one of Einstein’s theories to be wrong! He went on to teach at CERN in Switzerland, a really very impressive place! He was nominated to win a Nobel Prize (a very big prize in science) but unfortunately died before it was awarded. He also had amazing hair and cool glasses.
John Bell is very inspirational, if you work hard and want to do something you will get there!
