I spent four years doing an undergraduate degree called a Bachelor of Science (or B.SC.) in biomedical science.
Most scientists have at least a BSc that covers the basics in their field, and some go on to do a master’s (one or two years) or doctorate (usually about 4 years).

It has taken me a long time – I spent 5 years doing an undergraduate degree in chemistry. I had an extra year because I changed from biomedical science to chemistry. I then did a PhD in biochemistry and that took 7 years (in America). Then I did research after the PhD for 6 years…and finally I started teaching at University College Cork just over 15 years ago!
