I made one in my second year of college. It was part of a project I had to do. We programmed robots to drive around a little track and detect when they had reached an intersection in the road. The robots were supposed to stop and avoid traffic if they didn’t have right-of-way before moving on. We used PIC Microcontrollers to drive the motors and a radio transmitter for communicating with a central control computer that managed traffic flow.
Two Summers ago I was involved in teaching at a thing called the Walton Club in Trinity. For those session we got kids to program robots that could drive around and catch balls that were fired at them from a catapult. We used Arduinos for that. It was pretty cool!
