Science is not a big money maker, but then I don’t really care for money. I make enough to live and I don’t need much more

I’m still a student so I don’t make that much money but its not about the money for me.

Ohhhh, that is a good question! The rate of pay varies based on seniority. I make enough money to be happy and have a reasonably normal life. If you are really curious about pay for people working in Universities, then you can google it. We are public servants so our pay is public knowledge. Google UCC pay scales, or UCD pay scales etc.

I am a PhD student so have a monthly stipend at the moment which is close to minimum wage. Money isn’t so big a motivator for me, it is more important that the work is rewarding and that there is balance between my studies and my family life. There is of course an issue in the stability of the work – many of the positions in academia tend to be short contracts, which are not really compatible with allowing you to fulfill family responsibilities or apply for a mortgage for example. But there are people campaigning to change this 🙂

I make enough to be happy and above all many a times job satisfaction is more important to me than money. The scale of salary increases with years of experience and nature of project involved in.
