I mainly study bacteria, these are microscopic single-celled organisms. Other people study fungi like yeasts and molds, or parasites like Cryptosporidium or viruses like Norovirus or Hepatitis A/B/C/E etc. I am looking for new drugs produced by bacteria from dairy products and processing environments, so lots of lactic acid bacteria and others. Then, I am testing these drugs against dangerous bacteria, particularly those that are very resistant to antibiotics. Some of these disease-causing pathogens that I study are Listeria monocytogenes, Cronobacter sakazaki, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, you might have heard of some of these as they can sometimes contaminate food which needs to be recalled to stop people eating it and becoming sick. Let me know if you’d like to know more about this, thanks for your question 🙂
