Thalidomide. It was marketed to prevent morning sickness in pregnant women in the 1950’s but it the children born were deformed quite badly. They took the drug off the market but then discovered it is good fro treating leprosy. So in Brazil, where some of the population is very poor, they have lepros. They gave them this drug, but all the instructions are in English and Brazilians speak portuguese. So they can’t read that they should not have children while on this drug. Also, some of them can’t read so it doesn’t matter if it’s in English or Portuguese. So now there is a whole new generation of young people born with no legs or no arms in Brazil. it’s tragic.

Crystal meth. It has no therapeutic purpose and seems to be one of the most addictive and damaging drugs, both to individuals and societies, Louis Theroux has done a few documentaries covering its wider impacts on American society. Breaking Bad is another, albeit fictional, example.
