A nanoparticle is an extremely small particle which size is at the nanoscale. The word “nano” comes from the Greek word for dwarf. For you to have an idea on how tiny a nanoparticle is, a nanometer is a billionth of a meter. For to you to picture it better, a tennis ball is to the earth what a nanoparticle is to a tennis ball.
Nanoparticles by size is very small which cannot be seen by naked eyes or normal light microscopes but only under powerful electromagnetic microscopes. The hype about nano is not just because of the size, rather because of the exceptional properties materials show at this dimension which may be completely different than its parent material. That is the reason it’s being used in lot of medical applications ranging from imaging to drug delivery.
