An opioid is a class of several types of drugs that have similiar but slightly different molecular structures. It gets its name from the opioid receptor that it interacts with in the human body. Some opioids are used in medicine as pain-relievers, e.g. morphine, others are illegal e.g. heroin.

An opioid is a major class of drugs that are usually used for pain relief (eg morphine) but also they can be widely abused due to their addictive properties (eg heroin).
