Hi Jodie,
First of all, I’m delighted you’d also like to do this kind of work, because it’s great fun!
Like you, I also started off with an interest in animals in general. It was during my first year at university that I discovered people studied extinct animals preserved in rock as fossils. Then I started looking for fossils whenever I was near nice rocks. 🙂
A great place to look for fossils is in Co. Clare in the Burren: almost every limestone rock there has some fun animals preserved! I can suggest some good books to read if you want to learn more! 🙂
Two great books about the earth and fossils are: “A short history of nearly everything” by Bill Bryson and “A Fish Caught in Time: The Search for the Coelacanth” by Samantha Weinberg.
For a guide to the Irish rocks and fossils, have a look at this website: http://geoschol.com/ireland.html
And lastly, I wrote a series of articles on Irish Fossils on Science Spin magazine: you can read them online at sciencespin.com
Hope this helps! 🙂
