Thats a good question. The answer is we dont really know yet but thier is plenty of ideas. One idea is that dreams work hand in hand with sleep to help the brain sort through everything it collects during the waking hours. They think this because when people learn new things they seem to dream more as well.
Another idea is that because when we sleep our bodies slow down our brain might start making loose and sloppy connections with itslef which are what we see as wierd dreams. The last idea is that dreams serve no porpose at all and are simply a side effect of having a large brains.

Theres a whole BBC documentary about it as well if you are interested in learning more!
