I have always found birds interesting (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t find them a little interesting? They can fly!). However, it wasn’t until I did a field course in Glendalough, Co. Wicklow during my third year in my science degree that I really became interested in them. During this field course we got introduced to the wonderful variety and number of bird species that we have in Ireland. We also learned about their different behaviours, feeding techniques, songs etc. Then, for my thesis as part of my science degree I got offered the opportunity to study the behaviour of some birds in Indonesia. I got to travel to a really beautiful and exotic part of the world to study some bird species that we know very little about. It was then I became hooked! I do enjoy learning about and seeing other animals besides birds, but I just find birds endlessly fascinating and they’re much easier to see than other animal groups
