In science you have to write a paper called a grant requesting money for your job and for the experiments you want to do. It is very competitive in science and experiments are really expensive too! If you do get a grant, you usually don’t make very much which is a bummer. But at least you like your job!
When you’re starting out as a PhD student, you apply for funding with a supervisor, or they’ll have funding already and advertise a position or project. You don’t get paid lots of money, but it’s enough for a single person to live a decent life, especially in a great city like Galway. You can’t really have fancy cars or go on round-the-world holidays, but I enjoy my job more than most people and that makes it worth it. There are also lots of opportunities for travelling to conferences and to meet other researchers, and all of those trips are usually covered, which is a nice way to see new places. Science takes a long time to make you rich (if ever!) but it’s a really fulfilling job.
