We don’t know a lot about the ocean. As a previous student stated, we’ve only explored about 5%. So there are a lot of questions, a lot of unknowns, and in Ireland kelps are really understudied. So in order to ask questions about kelp forests I really describe what I see seasonally, and then I can take patterns I observe to ask future questions.
My work is actually a project funded by two research bodies, my supervisor actually came up with the idea and I do the work needed to get it done. I was working in London when the idea was hypothesised. The rationale was that there is nothing close to what I am currently doing actually available, and is a big gap in knowledge. What got me interested was the chance to contribute to Irish meteorology and climate research, as there hasn’t been a huge amount done in the area at all up until recently.
My supervisor also came up with my hypothesis! He is really interested in generating electricity from crystals and other materials, and also electricity in the human body. We designed the project together because I wanted to use both coding and experiments to solve the problem, and we decided what techniques I would like to learn during my research.
