I always try and look out for the roots of words, I’ve been doing that since I was a child, because J.K Rowling often had hints about characters based on their names! She called Professor Lupin that because Lupin is the Latin for wolf, and he’s a werewolf. In science, words usually have some sort of Latin or Greek root, and lots of them are very similar to English and even Irish words for things. I’m a very wordy person so I don’t mind the long words too much, but it’s all about practice.

I think the longer you do science, the less hard words you have to know. You only have to know the hard words that have to do with your own research project, and because you use them every day they just get stuck in your brain. When I started my PhD I did exactly what I did in school- write out the definitions in a mind map and stick it to my desk!
