Kidneys are really important in processing waste that your body produces so it takes your body awhile to recover from losing a kidney. But we can function with just one!
The person who donates a kidney is actually at greater risk than the person who receives the kidney, but research shows that people who donate kidneys live long, healthy lives after donating. The donor will obviously have reduced kidney function and sometimes this can have negative effects, but generally people end up just fine.
