It is great to wake up in the morning, have a cup of coffee, and jump in the water. I mean it’s actually really cold. But- I think it is nice to ask questions, read about them, and then design projects that will answer those questions better. In the end I can look at my data and tell a story about an animal or plant that it couldn’t tell me itself.

I always adored labs at college, and I really enjoy learning all the time, even if exams are stressful. In 3rd year I decided that it would be a good idea to go looking for scholarships for PhDs, as they’re very competitive and often have early closing dates. So I applied for one after approaching a lecturer to be my supervisor, and I also did my final year project (A 10 week research project) in his lab which was INCREDIBLE. Almost nothing I did worked, more than half of the experiments were total failures, but it was all about trying to find solutions and identify the problems. When I loved the lab that much, I knew research science was the right choice, and then I was lucky enough to get that scholarship I applied for!

I’m very similar to Joanne actually đŸ™‚ I studied applied physics in college and that was really exciting- I did loads of chemistry and robotics and medical physics. It really made me want to do my own research and contribute to science myself.

Great question Abbie, because science is exciting, its problem solving, its asking questions, its working in the knowledge that the work you are doing will be appreciated, used and studied by someone else. Plus…knowledge is power, where’s the best subject to get more knowledge? Science!
