Very simple, you wouldn’t be able to see otherwise! Light enters the eye through the pupil, and the iris regulates the amount of light by controlling the size of the pupil. Its just an opening in your iris, the more light you are exposed to the smaller the pupil and vice versa!
Yup, exactly that- the pupil controls how much light enters the eye- too much and your eye would get damaged, too little and you couldn’t see. Your pupil will be a different size in the dark and when it’s bright.
