China has the largest number of people in the world, which means there are more cars (which release carbon dioxide), and a lot more electricity being used. Electricity is made by burning fossil fuels like coal, which causes lots of pollution.China also has lots of factories which release pollutants, and their government have fewer laws that make people and factories control their pollution.
Excellent question, not only is it because there are so many people living in China, or that they have relied on coal etc its because of its awkward geographical location. Looking at Beijing, it is situated between two mountain ranges. When a high pressure weather system moves in, air near the city’s surface doesn’t move up and over the nearby mountain ranges. It just sits there, getting more and more polluted, and residents keep breathing it in.
