Being a scientist, I am pro GM when crops come with humanitarian or environmental benefits.
Deficiencies like vitamin A in developing countries could lead to a million deaths annually, most of them children, plus an additional 500,000 cases of blindness. Therefore, scientists from different institutions came together to develop Golden rice as a genetically engineered &, biofortified crop, in order to produce beta carotene, which is not normally produced in rice. Beta carotene is converted into Vitamin A when metabolized by the human body. This Vitamin A is required for healthier skin, immune systems, and vision in human beings. In developing countries, its hard to get a balanced diet, therefore daily supply of Golden Rice could bring the gift of life and sight.
Probably, GM is not the technology we need in Europe currently, but it is something the can accelerate breeding in future with help of conventional; and more advanced breeding techniques.
