Foods that have lots of added salt, fat or sugar are highly processed. If we can’t grow it or see it in a field it is processed. Processing can be good and is needed to keep foods fresher for longer, and to make some foods safer to eat and drink. Some processing even adds value to a product, and gives us more nutritional benefits, than the unprocessed type.
But some foods are very processed, with lots of added sugar, fat or salt and very little nutritional value. such foods include sweets, crisps, chocolate and food from some of the chains of fast food restaurants. These are okay as a treat, but we shouldn’t be eating them all the time. We should try eat as wide a variety of foods as possible, including lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and if we are eating meat it should be fresh, without breadcrumbs or batter, and the less salty kinds (sausages, bacon, rashers). But these are all okay as a treat sometimes too.
