Saffron; the most expensive spice in the world, are the vivid crimson stigma and styles generally called as threads from the flowers of Crocus sativus, commonly known as the “saffron crocus”. Each flower has three threads (stigma and styles) in the center, which are hand harvested. To obtain one pound of saffron, more than 80,000 crocus flowers must be grown, cared for, hand-harvested and processed manually. Thus, production of saffron is labor intensive process, due to this reason saffron is so expensive.
Saffron is a spice which plant can grow in far away places like Greek (their original place) and in Italy since it requires a lot of sun.
Like many products from abroad this can uplift the price.
