Food science is extremely important for your health since the digestive system is an easy way for bacteria and virus to invade our bodies; we therefore need to prevent this event to happen.

I try improve food safety and quality. I do this by developing faster and more accurate tests for bacteria in food that can cause food to go off, or cause food poisoning. This work is important to the community, as it will hopefully make sure less people get sick from foods, but also prevent foods that are poor quality making it to the shop shelves. It is an awful feeling spending money, buying a food, bringing it home, looking forward to eating it, opening it up, only to realise that it is gone off, or the quality is not what you would expect. My work will hopefully prevent this from happening as often.

We need to produce food in a way that we don’t harm the environment. My work is important in developing this area and making food available to the growing world population

My work is to ensure food security by developing resilient and abiotic/biotic stress tolerant crop varieties. This will lead not only to crops that can grow in harsh climate/tolerate diseases/pests, but also to the environment with less chemical (fungicide/pesticide) applications, which is both economical to the growers and eco-friendly.
