• Question: what age did you start learning bioethics

      Many thanks for the question! I was in my 20’s when I started a PhD examining the possible social justice effects that new genetic engineering might bring – especially if the rich could get enhancements for their children and the poor could not – and to use this to reflect upon existing social inequalities in society. That was when I really focussed on bioethics. Before that, I started learning bioethics in my undergraduate courses in NUIG (in Department of Philosophy). I was very interested in science in secondary school where I started to really see how science and new technologies can change the world, and also change how we view the world. I was also fascinated by science fiction when I was a kid – especially Star Trek and Steven Spielberg movies!

      I did genetics in college where we touched on the subject of the ethics of organ transplants, stem cell research, and genetic engineering. We did this in our third/fourth year of the course so I was 20/21 then. 🙂
