Hi @fionabreen,
the sun is a great big ball of fire mainly consisting of hydrogen and helium gasses. The hydrogen is responsible for the vast amounts of solar radiation produced by the sun. In a process called “fusion” the hydrogen subjected to very high pressure, turns into helium and produces intense radiation (it is an exothermic reaction). The solar radiation travels through space to reach our little planet and sustain life. There is so much hydrogen stored in the sun that scientists expect it to last for at least another 5 billion years!!!
Here is an idea of how vast are the amounts of energy produced by the Sun. The sun offers more energy in 15 minutes than the human race uses in a whole year. And this is only the energy reaching our little planet!
