New Materials Zone

New materials are cleverly designed substances based on recent technology. From flexible, lightweight, transparent and electrically conductive materials that can be worn to monitor your heartbeat and record unusual symptoms, to chewing gum containing finely powdered glass that can help to protect teeth and gums from decay.

In this zone, you’ll meet a scientist who 3D prints new body parts, a scientist designing devices that replace discs in your spine which wear down as we get older and a scientist researching how to convert oxygen into electricity. There’s someone looking at how to make brain implants that can think and remember, someone designing tiny structures that act as lasers and someone researching nanomaterials — things 1000 times smaller than the width of a human hair!
