      Deafness can be caused by a number of things, possibly as a complication of a virus, or because of disease, nerve damage, or injury caused by noise. About 3 in 1,000 babies is born deaf usually due to genetics.

      Exactly as Maureen said! The only things I will add are that deafness can also occur in the womb because of an infection and outside the womb because of infections as well! Also being born premature can increase the risk of becoming deaf as well
