Aha – String theory is a theoretical physics idea that tries to do something that Physics has not been able to do – explain why both Gravity and Quantum Mechanics exist! The theory of gravity is amazing. The theory of Quantum Mechanics is amazing. But there is no one theory that explains them both. One of them says that matter is tiny particles and you can know where they are all the time – that’s gravity. Quantum Mechanics says that actually everything is probability. You can’t know where everything is all the time – you can only guess.

String theory is an idea that all matter is actually vibrating strings. That explains the probability bits. But if you look at the strings from very far away the behave like particles – and that explains the gravity bit.
