  They don’t grow, but what does happen is the skin dehydrates and recedes a bit, giving the appearance that the hair and nails are longer!

  Gavin has hit the nail on the head for this one! Before we knew that though people used to think it was a sign of the dead coming back to life, which is where a lot of stories about the undead (zombies, vampires, etc) come from!
