Hi Jade,
It is a long time since I did pharmacology (study of Drugs) however I did study it so I’ll give this question a go (Roisin may be much better informed than me though).
There are many different types of drugs which are addictive physiologically i.e. your body physically craves and will go into withdrawal if you don’t have them for example; opiate type drugs e.g. heroin , morphine, codeine, drugs like crystal meth, cocaine etc.
Other addictive drugs include nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, cannabis etc. Some times they may be referred to as habit forming drugs (i.e. there may not be a physical addiction but there is a psychological one).
Many drugs will not kill you but may lead to a lifestyle that will ultimately end your life. many IV drug abusers acquire HIV, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and other blood borne infections from sharing needles. Due to their lifestyle they will not receive medical attention, healthcare and this can lead to their death. Many people may be addicted to or have drug habits (i..e cannabis use, solpadeine addiction) which allows them to lead a relatively normal life. However their life will probably be as productive as they could be.
I hope I have answered your question somewhat, it’s not my area of expertise though…
