Cigarettes are made up of tobacco leaves, which have a psychoactive drug called nicotine in them.
They are dangerous for your body. Smokers are at a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and cancer, along with general breathing problems.
Cigarettes are made primarily of tobacco leaves, however, there are a huge number of other additives in cigarettes as well, which vary depend on which company makes them (here is a list of 599 additives in American cigarettes collected from 5 manufacturing companies in 1994: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_additives_in_cigarettes).
Tobacco leaves themselves contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance (according to most studies, the most addictive drug that is commonly consumed), however, the by-products of burning the leaves and additives in cigarettes include tar, arsenic, formaldehyde, ammonia and carbon monoxide, all of which are very harmful to human health. It’s estimated that burning a cigarette can produce up to 4000 compounds, up to 70 of which are carcinogenic (cancer-causing), and others which are harmful in different ways.
As Mark said, smokers are at a much higher risk of a variety of potential diseases and illnesses, many of which can be fatal, so the best advice there is on smoking is: don’t do it! It’s not worth it.
Stopping smoking is the number one thing one can do to improve their health. The interesting thing about tobacco is how addictive nicotine is. When you keep doing something even though you know it’s detrimental to you, that’s addiction, and you can see that all around you with smokers. I smoked for years, what an idiot!
