in terms of metals, we don’t really make many from scratch. but as it suggests, we have learned to combine different metals into what we call an alloy, and the most useful and strongest of those for us is steel.

If we move away from metals, there are a few non-metal materials that show ridiculous tensile strength, but are difficult to upscale to practical amounts. Two examples are spider silk, which is far stronger than steel, and carbon nanotubes, which we struggle to make long enough. perhaps some day we will be able to find a way to work with them!
