My favourite thing I do in work is eating cake. Every week, a different person in the lab bakes a cake. This weeks was a chocolate cake (http://imgur.com/a/xeYiT).
On a serious note, my favourite thing is looking at new data. There is something very exciting about looking at data on an object and knowing that no one has ever seen it before, and that it’s something new.
I am so jealous of that cake, it looks amazing! We need to institute weekly cake in my lab!
I think my favourite thing to do is to sit down with the data from reactions and figuring out what happened in my reaction, and my absolute favourite thing is when the data works out and tells me that my reaction worked the way it should!
My favourite thing in research is when I finally solve an equation that has been bugging me a long time, and the results align with the experiments. Feels great!
My favourite thing in teaching is when I really get into a topic and I realise that all the students are listening and understanding. It’s an amazing feeling when it happens! Once I was teaching Maths for Business to 400 students (!), and usually I’m lucky if 200 hundred pay attention. But that time I said: this is a difficult concept but if you stay with me for the next 15 minutes, you will understand it, and they all listened and nodded. Later they all got that part right in the exam, so I knew that it had worked!
