An interesting question as I toyed with the idea of doing forensic science after I graduated but never followed up on it. There is a chemistry with forensic science degree in UCC and something similar in GMIT. There are also post graduate diplomas that specialise in forensic biology. A degree in molecular biology would be a good starting point for forensics, this can be done through a general science degree. If you wanted to do something along the lines of the state pathologist then you would as Michel says need to do medicine first and specialise in pathology and take it from there. Talk to your careers advisor tho and they should be able to advise you further ?
I actually did the Chemistry with Forensic Science degree in UCC myself, and while you definitely do forensic science, the main focus is on chemistry, as that forms the basis of most forensic science. As Karen said, I believe you can do a similar course in GMIT, and there’s also a course in LIT, but that focuses more on pharmaceutical forensics I believe.
There are also multiple places in the UK which offer forensic science courses, but I’m afraid I wouldn’t know which is the best place to do it, although this website does rank the UK forensic science degrees based on entry requirements, student satisfaction, research quality and job prospects: http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings?s=Forensic%20Science Hope this helps with your question!
