Earthworms are very important for the environment. they eat dead plant material helping to recycle the nutrients in the soil, making them available to other organisms and ultimately also to living plants.
Their burrowing in the soil helps soil structure by making it more aerated and also helps water move freely through the soil which can be very important in places with a lot of rain like Ireland.
Earthworms are themselves a food source for many animals like birds, badgers and other animals.
If you dig a bit of soil and you see many worms than that is a good healthy soil.
