  Tough question for me, but I will give you my understanding.
  
  Its all about time and the nature of the injury. During amputation its important to minimize bleeding so if you cut off circulation it will take you longer to lose your blood and go into shock, giving you more time to reach help. Without medical care though I would say pretty much all amputations are fatal.
