      Dear Sard49dug,
      You can make plastic from different derivates of petrol oil and, recently, from peculiar genetically modified corn plants that produce a substance that can be converted in plastic.

      The starting ingredients of plastic are usually derived from oil which contain long chains of complex molecules of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and other elements. Different types are plastics are then derived from these starting molecules using chemical reactions or physical transformations. At least that is my understanding, but I am definitely no expert!
