What a great question, thank you !
We use rocks as little books, they are just waiting for you to tell their story. We have diverse way to understand that story, using physics, chemistry or maths to solve the mystery. Those mysteries can range from the creation of a mountain or its evolution, to volcanoes eruption, earthquakes, tsunamis, climate changes. We can use rocks from Earth but also out of space and compare them. Knowing how Earth work is important for example to predict how Earth will evolve, what populations are at risk and what are the hazard they could face.
Geology is a very diverse field. Some of us like Vincent and myself work in the lab. I produce rock powder and dissolve it in the lab to get their chemical fingerprint.
Others are in the field and map the different kind of rocks and their relationship to each other. They also look for potential deposits that we can keep our living standard as we need a lot of metals in our electric devices. You might have also heard about renewable energy. A lot of metals that is underground and sits in rocks are used for the energy transition. So geologists are highly needed in the future.
