Volunteering since…
Since 2018

Favourite thing about being a Cell EXPLORER volunteer:
Meeting other Cell Explorers volunteers and also gain confidence and experience in delivering scientific information students and other volunteers
-
My best tip for extracting DNA:
Try to get the filter paper part right, if every pupil does the filtration well, everyone will get to finish on time and it will be easy for you to communicate with everyone.

I grew up in Zambia, a very beautiful country with one of the worlds’ 8 natural wonders (Victoria falls). I came to Ireland in 2017 and I started studying science in 2018 and that’s when I started volunteering with cell explorers. Volunteering with the cell explorers has been one of my favourite activities in college especially because it has helped me improve my confidence and making friends too. My favourite thing to do outside school is to experiment with cooking especially with traditional Burundi and Zambian dishes. I just picked up cycling, I was able to cycle the Waterford greenway and now I want ride all the greenways in Ireland. I Also enjoy reading especially while listening to music, I read mostly non-fiction books especially on human psychology and behaviours. I am not very active when it comes to sports but I do enjoy a good workout at the gym

My day usually involves waking up around 7 o’clock in morning. The first things I do is to pray, do some stretches and the then prepare my breakfast. After that I then do tidying up around the house especially my study table where I spend most time of the day. Most of my afternoons are spent on my table where I catch up on current affairs, social media and my favourite shows. After that I practice on Portuguese for about 1hour, my aim is to be fluent in the language after lockdown. Then around 5pm I start to prepare my dinner of which I get done by 6:30. It takes about 1:30 hours to get done eating and cleaning up. After that I relax and reply to texts and make some few calls until 9pm. I been trying to get into a habit of reading for at least an hour and half before going to bed. I am currently half way through a book called Thinking fast and slow written by Daniel Kahneman. This book aims to explain the two hypothetical systems of decision making in our brains called as system 1 and system 2.
