Hi Fiona, I am not not quite sure where thoughts come from but we know they originate from the brain but then I guess the real question would be, what influences us to form our thoughts? I will try to answer your question using an article I found on psychology today and also give you my personal view on the matter.
According to an article on psychology today by Ralph Lewis a psychiatrist at the university of Toronto, thoughts are said to be the basic way to show and agree with things that our brains have become aware of such as our senses, emotions and then come up with an action plan to explain them.
Personally, I think thoughts are what we use to interpret our surrounding. I think we use thoughts to make sense of the world. Therefore, the world or our surroundings are the sources of our thoughts.
