First, most great inventions are the result of lots and lots of previous discoveries and inventions in the past. So, for example, we needed to learn loads of stuff about physics and chemistry before we could invent the battery (which is definitely a brilliant invention).
Personally, I think one of the greatest creations in the last 300 years is the vaccine. It has wiped out certain strains of disease entirely and continues to save lives to this day.
