Not as much as a banker or lawyer! But the pay is generally good in Ireland (considering we all have PhD’s!). In other countries it can be more or less.
To do a PhD, one must be willing to make certain sacrifices. One of the biggest sacrifices is taking a home a smaller paycheck than one would earn in an industry job.
However, over the years the salary for new STEM graduates has continually declined to such a point that after tax, there really isn’t much of a difference anymore.
Even though the money may not be great, I find the work to be so much more rewarding, and money can’t really buy that!
I wouldn’t get pick a career based on money. Do what you love and follow your passions. Science can be very financially rewarding if you work in industry less so in academia.
