My research directly affects the patients who enroll to take part in our studies. We often are able to diagnose these patients by looking at their genetics and tell them what the cause of their disease is. This puts a name to a disease and has the potential to guide doctors on how best to treat the patients.
Hopefully it will improve diagnosis of disease, and therefore patient health. The research also provides training for young students and scientists, in Ireland and abroad.
I hope that one day it will directly affect patients (with a new treatment) and at the moment it affects other cancer researchers but giving them another little piece of the puzzle- and who knows what the piece is that will lead to a big new breakthrough?
Hopefully my work will help doctors diagnose people more rapidly and that way they can start treatment sooner and hopefully stop people dying. It also hopefully will stop the increase in antimicrobial resistance among pathogens as more specific rapid diagnosis means that less antibiotics or drugs are given out without knowing the exact cause of the illness!
