The work I’m doing focuses on rare diseases, which are what I’d really like to cure. These rare diseases only affect a very small number of people in the world (5 people out of every 10,000), but all together, as a group, so-called ‘rare’ diseases aren’t so rare. Supposedly, 6% of the European population has a ‘rare’ disease. The FutureNeuro project which was recently funded by SFI aims to diagnose, treat and ultimately cure rare neurological (brain) diseases. I also work on rare kidney diseases as part of my research at RCSI.
We are working on new techniques to analyse human health on a molecular level, which could lead to a much better understanding of a whole range of diseases, but also how to recognise them at an early stage of development, which often is the key to an effective cure.
Alzheimer’s disease.
It is a terrible thing to see somebody lose their memory. In a way, it is like somebody losing their persona – forgetting family, friends, where you live, who you are. It is a disease which will become more common in years to come, so to cure it now would be great.
