Yes, if you want to go into academia and do research or if you want to lecture at college a PhD is a great way to do it. Also a PhD gives you loads of skills that you can use in all parts of life, like organisation, self-motivation, critical thinking, its a learning experience, its not just about the science!
It really depends on what you want to do as a career. It is tough work, so I wouldn’t do one just for the sake of it, but it is more or less accepted now as the minimum for a career in research. I know also that PhDs in physics are very well accepted in other fields such as even high finance and stock markets. Physics in particular is known for problem solving and logical thinking.
